XMAS loot list

Here's my haul in no particular order.

I got a bunch of Magic: The Gathering cards, and a bunch of 3-ring binder sleeves to store them in, Star Wars (I refuse to call the 1st movie by any other name) and Return of the Jedi lithographs in nice, heavy folder things. Here's the fronts...

and the backs...

and the lithographs themselves. Sorry if these first few pics are a bit dark.

I also received a plushie Darth Vader, a set of Spider-Man cookie cutters that make your cookies look like comic book covers, a deck of playing cards shaped like a penguin....

a Boba Fett/Han Solo mug, a penguin wearing a pink parka, a Slave 1 tree ornament (that was a present from me to me)...

the campy Flash Gordon dvd, a Muppet's Beaker ornament, a big bottle of wine...

a DC Comic's Flash emblem mug, a Darth Vader/Luke Skywalker mug, a penguin shaped hand soap dispense with spiced cookie scented soap, a factory defective Stormtrooper, and that Kevin Smith & Stan Lee documentary "Mutants, Monsters, & Marvels."

Here's a closer look at the messed up Stormtrooper. I'm thinking that batch of clones had an ingredient or two left out.

And this is the packet of cocoa that came with the mugs, well, two packets for two mugs. It was a set.

And here's a panoramic view of the art on the mugs. I dunno why the sound never transfers when I put a movie from my phone onto the computer. *edit* Apparently the video sound works if I then transfer it to another medium.

Not pictured: many delicious snacks and candies. Because I ate them all.

Thanks everybody!

Put it in your mouth because I said so!

My awesomeness now extends to the making of FRUIT CAKES! Yes, that misunderstood and oft belittled holiday staple has found redemption thanks to me. You may laugh but lets see you make meringue with a hand mixer that only has one beater. As a surprise no less. I didn't know going into this that I'd have to do that. And hats off to all y'all who had to do it by hand in ye oldie times. Okay, technically I didn't make a meringue 'cause I only used egg whites but still. That's like making a whole nuther dessert to put inside the first one. And don't bring up cherpumple. You can cheat and buy pre-made pies for that.

And really, who's the sadistic chef that came up with the idea to make somebody stand in a hot kitchen and beat egg whites, of all things, until they were firm? BY HAND? That's some evil shit. I'm looking at you, dead French jerk. Second guess is tied for a Belgian or a Swiss... Swissie? Swissite? Swisher? Whatev, it took me just shy of an hour to make it and I still didn't get it 100% firm. Anyways, the cakes are in the oven for the next 2 1/2 hours. Mom says it'll take even longer than that.

Way back before dad retired and mom was still able run rings around lesser beings in the kitchen the fruit cakes were a holiday must. She made bunches of them to give to family and dad's co-workers. And not in a white elephant sort of way like with stereotypical holiday jokes. Everybody legitimately loved them. When she got to where she couldn't do it anymore people were worried she was mad at them because they didn't get a yummy fruit cake in the mail.

I'm not a big fan of candied cherries but I like them well enough in a fruit cake. If it was just for me I'd only use raisins, nuts and the candied pineapples. I'll have to investigate and see if other types of candied fruit are made. I only ever see cherries and pineapple this time of year. And while a fruit cake is good to eat at room temperature I like to slap it down with some butter and fry a slice or two. And of course I add splash or two of brandy for a truly delish Xmas treat. Maybe I'll share.

Disturbing thought about Xmas and Santa's origin

This morning my sister asked me if I knew Mrs. Santa Claus's name. According to Santa Claus Is Coming To Town it's Jessica, I said, but since he's based on an old Catholic bishop he didn't really have one. More likely he had an under aged boyfriend. We laughed. Then my devious and cynical nature took over.

I pondered further, to myself, that maybe Nicolas of Myra wasn't really being generous with all his gift giving to the poor - maybe he was paying them off to shut them up about what some priest did to their kids. Or worse, he gave out presents to lure kids himself. The poor have always been the target of opportunity for people getting up to no good. Who's to say what kind of spin the Vatican will put on all the child abuse cases and settlements a thousand years from now.

Granted, there are plenty of non-Christian traditions involving giving presents and young children's innocence that got woven into the mythology of Santa Claus but c'mon. Catholics love their traditions and have doing things the same way for ages. To be fair, there are plenty of Protestant preachers who are just as bad (sometimes worse) as the worst priests but A) they don't get as much press, and B) the Catholics have been around way longer and pretty much invented modern western religion and it's various holidays. Do we know anything about child molesting rabbis and imams?

Maybe it's time we got back to some good, old fashioned pagan values.

Baby news with pictures

I took my sister to stay with Julia and Roman this afternoon. They're at CAMC Women & Children's. Roman is still throwing up but he's also pooping so some food is getting through somewhere. His color is a lot better if nothing else.

Gross, the IV is in his head. He rolls his head around and doesn't seem to be bothered by it. He does manage to grab onto it every so often so there's a chance he might pull it out. He pulled off a piece of tape, and a chunk of hair with it. He didn't cry but he fussed until it finally came loose then he went back to normal like he hadn't just done that.

The docs aren't sure if he's still puking because of post-surgery tummy upset or if something else is needing fixed in his tummy.

To look at him you'd never know anything was wrong. Other than his hands and feet being cold all the time he seems outwardly fine. He doesn't fuss or cry like he's in pain or anything. He doesn't even make heaving retch noises when he throws up. He just turns his head to the side and out it comes. He sleeps through it sometimes. I hope all the puke gets cleaned out of his ears and he doesn't get any ear infections.

His little surgical scar was barely noticeable but if they have to go back in the next one will be vertical from sternum to belly button. That'll suck but when he's older he can make up stories about it to impress chicks.

Poor Julia, all her clothes have puke on them too. Now that her mother is there maybe she can get a shower and a nap.

He had a little bit to eat before I left around 6:30, and a little more since then, and he hasn't done more than spit up a wee bit. Maybe he just has a tiny tummy and needs to have many small feedings throughout the day instead of a few larger ones. Whatever the problem is, he's in a decent hospital so hopefully he'll be fixed up and back home soon.

more baby news

Roman started puking again. The hospital won't discharge him if he can't keep down a 3oz feeding. And if he can't he might need another surgery. Boo :(
I get the urges to clean at the weirdest times.

baby news

Roman came thru his operation easy-peasy. Sometime around midnight they're gonna try feeding him and see if everything works properly now.

Sunday, December 4, 2011

quick update

Roman is scheduled for surgery first thing Monday morning. We're waiting for my sister to get out of work so we can go to Charleston.

Saturday, December 3, 2011

Baby Update

The test they did this afternoon was inconclusive but they're all positive it's pyloric stenosis. He and his mother are being shipped to a hospital in Charleston WV. I'm guessing it's Women & Children's but don't quote me. Depending on which doc is on duty tonight they'll do the surgery as soon as he's checked in and whatnot.

Roman was dehydrated so they started him on an IV. It's in the left side of his head but he doesn't seem to mind. He only got fussy when the nurse came to check his vitals. And because he can't be fed since there's a surgical procedure in his immediate future. Hopefully by this time tomorrow he'll be patched up and on his way to recovery.

Oh noes for the baby

Roman had to go to the hospital last night. He won't stop puking and he's losing weight. It's either a case of super crazy reflux or pyloric stenosis. Since he projectile vomits and his belly looks like it has an alien in it my expert opinion is the later condition. Plus, his dad had that and while it isn't exactly hereditary the chances of it happening are much greater if a parent had it. Then again, his mother has had a problem with reflux her whole life.

We should find out this afternoon. He has an endoscopic procedure scheduled for around 1pm to see what's what. The reflux will be an easy fix with meds but the pyloric stenosis will require surgery. If that happens at least he and his parents will have matching scars. Poor lil guy :(

MORE BABY

Here's some more pics of my great nephew. He's already got a great repertoire of annoyed, confused, and generally over it type expressions. He even has the Elvis lip curl down pretty good. He also has crazy long fingers and toes.

He woke up when I was holding him so I took a little movie.

And this is what he wore when they made his newborn pics today there in the nursery - minus the binky of course.

Thank gods he's all healthy and not weird looking. Now we just need for Julia to get recovered. She's having a lot of pain, naturally, from the C section, and swelling and discomfort in her legs. That has something to do with potentially having blood clots. Plus she opted to breast feed and RomAn is nothing if not voracaious. I haven't seen nipples that messed up outside of an S&M club. They're supposed to be coming home tomorrow if all goes well tonight.
Babies are great and all but once you take them home you're kinda stuck with them.

Details

Alrighty, he's ten pounds and one half ounce, 22 inches long, with a 15 inch head. When did they start measuring heads? Time of birth was 1:07am on Noverber 8th. No word yet on when Julia and RomAn will be coming home.

FINALLY!

Sometime around 1:30am my youngest niece, Julia, finally had her baby boy. I think they did a C-section but don't quote me. The was the plan at midnight. Then I took a shower and when I got out there was a pic on my cell phone. I dunno the details on how big he is but Julia was saying he was ten pounds according to somebody who examined her a day or so ago.

So here he is, Romin Roman Conner Parks. Technically, his first name is spelled with an "I" but I refuse to do that. He better not throw up on the awesome Batman onesie I got him.

Aw, I made myself sad

A nerdy thing just occurred to me. At the end of the big duel in Revenge of the Sith Obi Wan tell Anakin not to make the jump because he (Obi) has the high ground. But way back in Phantom Menace it's Obi Wan attempting a jump from an even more precarious low ground than Anakin had.

This has prolly been discussed already on all the geek forums but I never bother to look at those. Somebody prolly came up with a convoluted explanation for why it worked once but not twice. I don't care, really. And I don't mean to sound like a nit-picky nerd. The faults of the prequels have been discussed ad nauseam by far more insightful people than me.

I had initially intended this post to be a silly jab at my laser-keen powers of observation. Like how, several years after it had been out, it finally dawned on me what L7's "Pretend We're Dead" was really about. I thought they meant chicks should put on pasty make up, dye their hair, and act all gothy and apathetic like a corpse as a means of social protest or achieving girl power by abandoning Barbie-esque standards of beauty. That was big at the time. Silly me.

I guess in retrospect I do care about how shitty the Prequels are, somewhat, from a "how could such a glaring inconsistency make it through to the finished product?" stand point. My initial emotional dismay over them was short lived so now it's all down to issues of shoddy craftsmanship. But really I'm more annoyed with my brain for waiting so long to have that thought. It makes me sad all over again each time I realize something like that. meh

Wednesday, August 31, 2011

It's time to put on make up, it's time to dress up right. It's time to rescue Muppets and drink Colt 45!

I had a dream about a group of Muppets who were being held prisoner by a sadistic rich dude. Not for pervert reasons, but more for his own personal Muppet show. They were blown up and had heavy object dropped on them a lot. They weren't any of the famous ones but they were definitely of Jim Henson design and not those knock-off Muppet-ish things you'd see on lesser shows.

They finally managed to pull of an elaborate and comical escape but the rich dude sent assassin droids after them. The rest of the dream was a series of chases and fights with lasers and rockets and pies and anvils. I was Lando Calrissian, holding court sexily in a casino sorta bar. The Muppets appraoched me for help in getting them into some sort of underground for runaway fictional characters. Really. I/Lando agreed to help them and then - as if on cue - the nastiest of the droids showed up.

We jumped in some sort of hover car and had another chase. It's the one Anakin and Obi Wan should have had in Episode 2, but it was in a modern, LA sort of city. The droid finally took out one of our engines so we had to ditch and make it into the sewers because the droid was too big to follow. I had my blaster out and was giving the Muppets covering fire as they scampered through a narrow hatch and the the alarm went off and woke me up.

Even though today has been very sunny it feels extremely dreary.

I used to be fairly scornful of people who took more than a couple of days to read a novel. Lately, though, I've been doing good to get one read in under a month. And it's not like I have all that much going on to keep me from reading. I guess I'm just lazy.

Athena

For the past six years or so I've had a sebaceous cyst on my scalp. It's been steadily getting bigger, as they're wont to do. I haven't been able to get it taken care of before now because I usually had more pressing health issues or car repairs that required my money. One of the benefits of living at home is that you can splurge on cosmetic surgery.

The procedure was pretty simple, only took about an hour. They shaved off some hair, made a slice, did some sniping and scooping, then stitched me up. The shot for the local anesthetic was the only thing that hurt, and even then not much. After that kicked in my head matched my heart in that it didn't feel anything. The doc showed it to me after he got it out. He said it looked like an ovary but I thought it was more like a water chestnut. The nurse was quicker than I expected and put the thing in a specimen jar before I could get a good pic so these will have to do.

That's the second time I've had a Something chopped off of me and I felt the intense urge to eat it. I managed to resist. They sent the cyst off for biopsy jut as a matter of course so I wan't able to bring it home and give it a proper burial like I did the crazy big skin tag from a couple years ago. For some reason I can't find that post to link to.

My head is a bit sore but they gave me decent pain killers to get me through several days. The stitches are starting to give me itches. I know that's a good sign and means shit is healing up but when my hair flops over the wrong way it really drives me crazy. I think I'm gonna have to forego doing Locks Of Love this year for the sake of not breaking down and scratching the hell out of the scar. It looks like this:

I haven't been able to keep a bandage on it after the first night but it doesn't seem to be oozy so I'll just let it go as is. I have to go back in ten days (from Friday) to get the stitches out. You should send me sympathy cookies to help with my recovery.

just a quick note...

Dear Young, Dysfunctional, White Trash Couple with Two Unhappy Kids in a Stroller and One on the Way,

Thanks for keeping it classy by leaving the store to stand right in front of our door before you started arguing, but not before you probably started shop lifting. It's that kind of thoughtful consideration that reaffirms my faith in humanity and reminds me that the future is an unwritten page. Of course, to be clear, I faithfully believe humanity is doomed and things are mainly unwritten because far to many people lack that basic skill. I hope your children one day think as highly of you as I do.

Hatefully, Ben
I think I might have foot cancer.

At least I'm consistant

Even though you're expected to remember everything little thing I say I understand if sometimes that's not easy. I say so many clever, insightful and funny things that it can be hard to keep track. Let me refresh your memories about one thing I've said many times over the years. Well, more like griped about...

Every time I try to save some money to either get a tattoo (or a more intimate piercing) or take a trip, or make some sort of major purchase crazy unexpected nonsense will come out of the blue and derail my plans. It happens almost any time I put some serious thought into a plan but it always happens without fail if money is involved.

I finally got a letter from the state tax department saying that my refund was gonna be a bit bigger than expected because I did something wrong on my federal return, and since that refund would be bigger so would the one from the state. Like, close to $500. Then my check comes and it's only for $18 because the larger federal return was just big enough to push me over into owing the state. Or something. I'm still trying to figure out what the hell.

Fine, whatever. I really want a certain piercing so I'll just get it out of my next paycheck. I got Tippy spayed, got two new tires (yesterday morning no less), got a booster box, fat pack, and all five starter decks for the new 2012 Magic Core Set. Next payday was free and clear - just like the back window of my car after I completely shattered it yesterday afternoon.

I was backing out of my parking spot in a very small lot when another car whipped in right beside me. Also, there was a large crane truck parked in the lot. I knew the truck was there, was keeping my one eye on it in my side mirror and the other eye on the dude pulling in. What I failed to take into account was that the bed of the truck was high enough that the rear end of my car went right under it easy as pie. And then the corner of the truck bed reminded me we live in a three dimensional world. The window didn't just crack. It completely shattered and all the pieces are scattered around my backseat.

I made sure the truck was fine and then I just drove on to work 'cause what else could I do? I called dad and asked him to start looking for me a new window. He found one but we can't get it until Monday. After I got off the phone with dad I was pulling up to a stop light and I started to get angry. Not just pissed at the universe being out to get me or my shitty luck, or even mad at myself for being careless but more like I went from Zero to insanely furious in 0.2 seconds. And then I hit the brake for the stop light and it jarred loose more pieces of glass that fell and tinkled all over the back seat. I just started laughing and kept laughing until the light turned green. After I got to work we had a torrential downpour.

I'm feeling a bit grumpier than usual today.

Tippy got snippied

Tippy Lou went to the vet yesterday to get her lady situation reconciled. She seems to be doing pretty well today. She got a bit restless around 4am but that was just 'cause she had to pee. I needed to shampoo my carpet anyways. Then a little bit ago I got up to take her outside but as I was putting my shoes on she peed again. I now have several more pads and sheets down on my floor. It looks like I hadn't straightened up my room at all.

While we were outside she tried to be rambunctious and play with the other dogs so I brought her back in. I'm thinking maybe the pain meds are helping her feel active, or at least not be in pain enough to jump around. I opted to get those extra. My thinking was that since I'll be working in the evenings the meds might sedate her while I'm away. So far though she doesn't seem to be any more calm than she normally is.

I had intended to post more pics of her lately but I haven't been able to find my camera. Odds are Tippy will find it under something in my room and give it a good chewing.

Full Moon Fever*

So I went bar hopping with my buddy Brad tonight. Well, just two bars. The first place, Rezan's, was a bit slow so after I kicked his ass at pool three games straight Brad decided he wanted to go to Rafter's. I never beat him at pool unless he scratches on the Eight, which he did on game one but the other two were legit wins. I chalked it up to the full moon. I was feeling good but no prob, a change of locale was fine with me.

No sooner had we walked in and up to the bar and some random dude turns around and tells me I look like a cross between Jerry Garcia and Captain Kangaroo. Before I could come up with a reply he throws out, "I'm not trying to piss you off or nothing." To which I say, "Well, you failed." Everybody laughs, and Brad and I take our beers to a table. Then, some guy Brad knows from back in the day comes up and starts playing catch up. He turns to me and says that I prolly don't remember him but he lived at where ever and was related to somebody. I give him a blank stare and shrug, say I dunno any of that but okay. He turns to Brad and asks if I'm his dad.

Whathfu? Okay, yes, I am technically old enough to be Brad's dad but still... I was glad to find out dude had been in prison and that his baby mama is a bitch and that he has trouble peeing. Stoopid full moon.

Check it out!

So I got a new piercing on Saturday, an industrial in my left ear. I always liked the sound of it because of one of my fave music subgenres. Sadly though, in my head I keep hearing "Industrial Disease" by Dire Straits instead of something awesome by Skinny Puppy or Einsturzende Neubauten.

It didn't hurt as much as I was expecting based on how my helix hurt when I got it last summer. I'm planning to get my eyebrow redone, and my right earlobe, this Saturday provided no unforeseen expenses crop up between now and then. I'll also be getting a few more when I get my tax refund, and hopefully some ink but more on that when it happens.

But look, I'm all freshly showered and shiny!

10, maybe 11 hours of sleep followed by a nice long shower made me feel betterish. Now I only wanna set fire to half the world. I'm hungry.

How do people get anything done with a TV on? I've been trying to dust with my shows on but all I can do is watch.

WTF ping.fm? Half my posts aren't showing up at all, and the others are showing up many hours late. I feel the need to hate you a lot now.
Ah, it's Friday the 13th. No wonder I felt good when I woke up.

I feel empty and anxious. Either the diet is starting to work on my metabolism or I just caught a glimpse of my soul.
Dammit! Forgot to put my tuna taco in the fridge after I got home. I hope the crows like wasabi.

more like record SCORE day

I got some awesome things, and yes I had an unfair advantage. I deserve it.

First up is Flogging Molly. I'm not a huge fan of Irish-ish drining music but I like it in small doses. These two songs will fit in nicely on some larger play lists. Limited pressing of 2000, but it's un-numbered. You can click these pics for a few more details.

Next we have an amazing Dio picture disc. Again, I'm not the hugest fan but I like him well enough. I really like the picture of the dragon, and I really like the expressions on the faces of my friends who really love Dio. I have number 1807 out of a pressing of 2500.

This is one I'm really glad I picked up. I haven't pick up and of the Foos since their 4th CD but I've alwas really liked them. I especially like how they cover songs, and this 12 inch is a collection of those. The RSD webpage says that it's a previously unreleased collection, and that may be technically true, but I have their version of Gary Numan's Down In The Park on an X Files soundtrack. I'm not sure how many of this one were made.

Again, I haven't picked up any Deftones since their 4th, and yet again this is a collection of covers. I've heard their version of The Cure's If Only Tonight We Could Sleep and it's really nice. This one is un-numbered from a limited pressing of 3000.

And here's my favorite one: a four song ten inch picture disc from Daft Punk's Tron Legacy soundtrack. The 4th track is previously unreleased. I have what I'm guessing is the red version but in real life it looks more orange. Double bonus!!! I'm not sure how many of this one were made, either.

I couldn't find an entry or a pic for my other purchase: a three track CD of Jimi Hendrix covers. Cee Lo Green does Foxy Lady, Santana does Spanish Castle Magic, and Robert Randolph & The Family Band do Purple Haze. It's a sampler for a full length CD, Power Of Soul - A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix. I also picked up samplers from Coachella, Sub Pop, Labrador Records, and Select-O-Hits, and a nice RSD vinyl tote bag.

The store had a big back log of CDs and LPs that have been piling up over the years, cluttering up the back room. We put those out for free just to get rid of them. I picked up a few nice CDs (Ting Tings, the Roots, Grant Lee Phillips doing 80s covers) and some interesting LPs (a Super Tramp radio special from December 1980, some other radio things that were supposed to be destroyed after they were played). Not a bad haul overall. There are a few more things I might pick up if we still have them next payday, but nothing I have to have. I'm just being greedy.

My right jaw has been sore for for about 2 weeks, poop has been weird for about the same length of time. I think it might be cancer.

Easter pretties, I has them

So since I took so long getting the Xmas stuff taken down and packed away (finally got it all done about three weeks ago) I decided to re-purpose my pink tree for Easter. Check it!

The ornaments are actually mom's, but she doesn't have a tree. Conveniently, I do. That's what we in the decorating trenches call synergy.

You can't really see the horns too well in this light but this is totally an Easter goat!

It's an Easter turtle, just hatching out to find some candy! And then over on the mantle I have some more stuff.

I dunno if this birdie is supposed to be a candle holder or an Easter egg holder. I also re-purposed this pink garland, and the green one on the tree.

Kinda hard to see the bird's beak, like with the goat horns.

And last but not least, the basket. This stuff will prolly be up until around the middle of June if Xmas is any indicator.
Finally remembered to do my taxes. Now I just need to remember to put that shit in the mail tomorrow.

Damn you, price-gougin' geeks! I might have to break my rule about never spending more than $5 (give or take) on a Magic card.

Saturday, April 2, 2011

Moved on to a Talking Heads Best Of. Doesn't have the songs I was jonsing for but still pretty awesome.
Think I'll start the day off with some Maxinquaye. I'm so old school.

Few things are as sublime as a fresh cup of black coffee and a warm danish.

How did old timey folk make it stop snowing? Was it an orgy followed by burning someone alive? At this point I'm willing to forgo the orgy.
Another zombie dream, nothing epic, just watching improperly fortified people get overrun and eaten in vivid detail. Kinda weird.

awesome day of geekery!

Yesterday, Tuesday, was a day full of geekery and shopping. I went to Charleston for some retail therapy, and I had the good fortune to be accompanied by my pals Andy & Robin.

The first stop was Drug Emporium (the one on Kanawha Blvd, not in Kanawha City) for some vitamins and healthy things to help mom's leg heal batter and faster. The we went for lunch at the Jamaican restauant but it was closed and gone. I'm so totally jonsing for some jerk!!! We had some yummy as hell BBQ wings and fried mushrooms at Leonard's instead. We got coffee at a local corner shop and climbed on the Mound.

*EDIT* Shit, I totally forgot the fun snacks I got at the Asian super market there by the Mound. I picked up some Kasugai kiwi and mango gummies, and some Ramune "POP soda" in peach, kiwi, and orange flavors.

Then off to Target where I got awesome Batman and Joker... things. I also picked up a Lego AT-ST mini kit (pictured farther down) and a couple of Magic booster packs. Then we went in Pier 1, Home Goods, and Michael's so I could find some Easter knick-knacks.

At Books-A-Million I got a couple magazines, Toyfare and a new one called Comic Heroes. It came in a card board envelope and had some freebies included. I'm a sucker for cool packaging, and considering the mag cost $20 those freebies weren't exactly free so I guess I'm just a sucker in general. I also got the first Game of Thrones novel, a little set of Moai heads, some DC heroes fridge magnets and badges and a neat-o Futurama mystery box. I got Leela.

Next we went to Toys R Us. I was hoping they still had some Venture Bros. figures but no such luck. I did pick up a couple of Lego minifigures. I got the samurai and the tennis girl. I really want the Hula gal.

After Corridor G we headed down to whatever Lost Legion calls their store in Charleston. I picked up a handful of Magic cards and a cool TPB.

After that we had dinner at IHOP then headed home. It was a good day on every level, even if I had to fix whatever my sister did to the lappy when I got home.
